Guest speaker, Carissa Wonkka, will talk about her research on the juniper removal projects in the Badlands. Then we will get on a bus and travel to 3 spots.

First, Forest Service officials will show us where the 2021 wildfire occurred near Medora. The Forest Service official will talk about the effects as well as a member of the Medora Grazing Association. Then we will drive through Theodore Roosevelt National Park and a representative of the Fire program at the Park will talk about a prescribed burn done in the park to control juniper. Next, we will visit a private landowner’s land where he used mastication to control juniper through an NRCS program. NRCS representative will talk about the program and give a landowner’s perspective.

The last stop is Forest Service land on Mike’s Creek where Forest Service has completed a mastication project to remove juniper. The Forest Service representative will talk about the project along with a member of the Medora Grazing Association. Sean Kelly of South Dakota State University Extension will be presenting his insight on juniper control in South Dakota and how landowners are dealing with woody encroachment in our neighboring state.
