Statewide Tree Planting Initiative

Program Description

Conservation tree planting is a vital component of agriculture systems, improves rural life, and enhances wildlife habitat. The ND Conservation District Employees Association, with funds from the ND Outdoor Heritage Fund, is continuing to fund the ND Statewide Tree Planting Initiative because:

  • Field windbreaks reduce soil erosion, reduce evaporation, and increase crop yields.
  • Conservation plantings reduce runoff and filter water.
  • Windbreaks provide habitat and protect roads from snow accumulation.
  • Farmstead plantings protect rural homes from snow and wind.

About STPI

Conservation District staff will provide technical assistance to plan and design the tree planting based on the needs, goals, and wants of the customer. Staff will order trees, machine plant them, and install weed barrier fabric as part of the program. After planting, the Conservation District staff will monitor the trees for survival and provide a report to the customer.

  • Cost-share is 75/25
  • Planning, planting, and weed barrier – all included!
  • All districts in ND are eligible – applications vary by district
