Throughout the course, you will come across many important terms associated with pollinators and the pollination process.

Annual

Plants that grow their entire life cycle in one season, dying at the end of the season

Anther

The male part of a flower that stores pollen grains

Cross pollination

The movement of pollen between flowers on separate plants

Native plant

Plants that have evolved and are naturally occurring in a particular region, ecosystem or habitat

Perennial

Plants that have a life cycle over many seasons, usually dying in winter and regrowing in spring

Pocket prairie

A small, artificially created area of land where the plants are predominantly native to the area

Pollination

The transfer of pollen grains from a flower’s anther to a stigma

Pollinator

Any animal that moves pollen from one part of a flower to another plant

Pollinator garden

A garden planted with flowers that provide nectar or pollen for pollinators

Self pollination

The transfer of pollen grains from an anther to a stigma within a flower or between flowers on a single plant

Stigma

The female part of a flower where pollen grains are deposited
